Barnaby Joyce – another media crucifixion.

The swinging voterOn-line or telly, it’s hard to miss a reference to Barnaby Joyce and his tattered, re-arranged personal life. As Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the National Party, he is not exactly a low profile politician.

His broken marriage has provided a wonderful feeding frenzy for the media and the ‘holier than thou’ types.

An ordinary person can just say  ‘mind your own business’. Not a politician though. There’s gold in them thar headlines. And the media, if criticised, would likely claim they are just being helpful by hanging out his dirty washing for him.

It’s not like this sort of thing hasn’t happened before. Husbands AND wives dump their spouses for another, every day. That doesn’t make it right of course, or help the families. But this exposé of private lives can only make it worse.

Calls for Barnaby Joyce to resign just add to the media drama. If he has broken rules or laws then he is accountable. His and his family’s personal life should remain just that; personal. There would be a lot of people out of work if a job resignation followed a marriage breakdown.

Maybe it’s the ‘tall poppy syndrone’ and Barnaby Joyce is a good candidate. I don’t know. I do know that I wouldn’t like my family as front page news for sales and drama queens.

This is not journalism. More and more I wonder how much pressure an individual can absorb, how relentless is the media in finding the limits ….

Cyber-bullying is what comes to mind. I moved to dismiss that thought but found I couldn’t. The very media, that splash headlines about a person (usually young) who has been cyber-bullied on Facebook, are themselves cyber-bullies.

A link or two for light reading…

Last night and this morning, after more Joyce headlines, I found myself humming two tunes; one included the lyrics Under Pressure and the other included the lyrics Crucify Him, Crucify Him. No religious slant here, just a reference to mob rule.

Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie and…

The 2nd,

Trial before Pilate from Jesus Christ Superstar

Words for today:     Pressure – implode or explode

  1. When you say feeding frenzy, do you as I do imagine Pyhranas snap, snap, snapping and leaving nothing but bones.
