Three members of a Russian female punk band with the not so subtle name Pussy Riot, are in jail awaiting sentencing for ‘ hooliganism motivated by religious hatred’.
Apparently, three members of the band 22, 24 and 29yrs delivered, from the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral, a not so pleasant sermon to a surprised congregation.
It’s said that the subject of their sermon was President Vladimir Putin and their actions were politically based. In other words, they don’t like the Russian President and want him out, the grammar apparently not sweet and innocent.
If Pussy Riot wanted headlines, I guess they have them now. They also have the prospect of seven (7) years in jail, but maybe ‘only three (3)’.
It’s hard to tell of course, from the news report, whether President Putin is trying to come across as the benevolent guy willing to let the thing pass; or, if the Federal Prosecutor is out to make a name for himself by nailing these girls to a cross.
Jail for three (3) years? How pathetic is that? No wonder people get pissed off when they can’t speak their mind without the threat of jail.
I’m not saying that these young women did nothing. They say they are good people who bring goodness and friendliness to the world.
Perhaps, but there is some hypocrisy in their actions. Whether they go for religion or not, they didn’t bring goodness or friendliness into the church.
They shouldn’t be jailed though.
What sort of President is so thin skinned that he wants these young women in jail. What sort of Christian behaviour by Church leaders would have someone jailed for swearing in church? Hardly forgiving or turning the other cheek.
Give them some community service, a fine of some amount, have them attend the church they offended and publicly offer their apologies; but don’t chuck them in jail. They might realise there are better ways. I wonder how Pussy Riot would like one of their performances interrupted by some other group on a mission to advertise a gripe or two.
Just as well Pussy Riot didn’t do something a little more serious, like steal a car. They probably would have faced a firing squad.

Word for today: Sermon
A religious discourse, a lecture on conduct or duty, an annoying harangue.
More to come; same blog time, same blog channel.
Although I do not appreciate distasteful language in any setting and certainly can not condone it is a place of worship, these types of incident always make me appreciate the freedom of speech I have had all my life. Here the strongest punishment I would be likely to receive would be my own embarrassment afterward.

I wonder if this group will experience any embarrassment for their actions? Being popular (at least for punk fans in Moscow) doesn’t mean they are right. They owe the church congregation an apology and need to figure a better way to get some publicity.

Agreed. It was the wrong way to go about things, but years in jail doesn’t seem right.

Not all free countries are created equal. I wonder how much publicity this story has received. I’d never heard about it.

I hadn’t heard of them either (no surprise about me really) but with their particular name and stunt in Church, I guess more were going to know of them. They copped about 2 1/2 years in jail from their free country. Thanks for looking in. Bruce
