Asylum seekers Australia – Jules and Tone – Schoolyard Tit for Tat.

I wonder if P.M. Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott have any idea of how they appear to the voting public?

Since the High Court canned the Malaysian swap deal, the issue has really hit the fan and a solution seems further away.

Perhaps the Gillard Gov’t is dirty that the Howard Gov’ts scheme for off-shore processing at Nauru wasn’t legally challenged as was the Malaysian swap deal. Maybe Labour is sulking, whinging about favouritism, who knows?

The disservice to both parties and voters by their leaders is boring and damaging. Resolving the asylum seeker issue has not been subjected to politics, just schoolyard tit for tat.

We have a parliament full of Members put there by voters. How naive can I get thinking that co-operation from all sides is needed for a workable solution that will serve both Australians and future elected governments? What do other countries do? Why is Australia always in the headlines over asylum seekers?

Something like this needs leadership and I thought Tony Abbott was  doing just that by extending the olive branch over Labour’s proposed amendments to the Immigration Act. This seems to have fizzled out.

I think that Julia Gillard should show the leadership required (that’s why she is there after all) and take full advantage of all suggestions from whatever party. Isn’t that what a good leader/manager does? Yes, yes I know; how naive can I get? But she may just dig herself out of a hole by doing this. Trying to re-invent and patent the wheel isn’t going to happen.

Genuine asylum seekers and refugees are a fact of life and Australia must do its bit. What we don’t want are people smugglers bringing in queue jumpers and of course the Bad Guys sneaking in the back door disguised as refugees.

A bi-partisan, tri-partisan (whatever number partisan) solution is needed for genuine asylum seekers and refugees. Not a band-aid solution but a solid platform that will hopefully benefit most and of course, sooner rather than later.

Then perhaps, to all people smugglers, Bad Guys and queue jumpers we can say as Father Ted says……….>>>>

  1. Hi,
The asylum seeker issue has really got out of hand I feel. So much so that our unelected PM has decided to not worry about border protection any longer. This is going to be a total disaster I think. The PM does not care about our country, power is all that she is interested in, that is what I personally believe.

    • Hi Magsx2, thanks for your visit and taking the time to leave a comment. I agree with you that the asylum seeker issue is out of hand; at least as far as we ‘average voters’ perceive. A power struggle, as you mention, seems to be the go. Your blog looks interesting and ‘I’ll be back’. Bruce
