A Queensland man may have accessed 178 child porn images because he was stressed at work, a court has heard.
Brentford Paul Higgins, 38, was yesterday found guilty in the Ipswich District Court of viewing the images between October 2006 and May 2008 at his home in Springfield Lakes, the Queensland Times reports.
The court heard police seized Higgins’ computer in 2008 after receiving a tipoff he was downloading child pornography.
Authorities did not find any images saved on the harddisk but were able to track down Higgins’ browsing history in a folder of temporary internet files.
There they discovered he had viewed 178 images featuring up to 50 children aged between three and 18.
At the hearing, Higgins’ lawyer Bradley Farr tendered documents from a psychiatrist showing his client had been under severe work stress and this was one possible reason for his actions.
Mr Farr also told the court that 32 of the images were cartoon anime and did not involve real children.
But prosecutor Kila Pedder argued that the images were a serious exploitation of children.
“The defendant has accessed child porn material over a significant period of time which shows his actions weren’t impulsive or opportunistic in nature,” he told the court.
Higgins was handed a 12-month suspended jail sentence and released on a $1000 good behaviour bond.

We can be pretty sure that this guy will have been checked out thoroughly. If he wasn’t checked out he should be; when he gets out of jail he will be a registered sex offender and monitored by authorities. At least I believe that’s what usually happens according to other news stories like this. Let’s hope so because he shouldn’t be allowed the opportunity to access other victims.
